Arthur’s Seat: Basically a big hill

The books I’ve read often guide my travels. For more than 20 years, Copenhagen was on my wish list because of the the book Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. When I was in Florence, I tried to envision it the way it must have been in E.M. Forster’s A Room with a View. So when we were in Edinburgh, I remembered the book One Day by David Nicholls was partially set there. At that point, I desperately wanted to hike up to Arthur’s Seat.

Arthur’s Seat is basically a big hill in Edinburgh. The top offers spectacular views of the city. It was easy enough to find the general area with our GPS, but once near the hill, we had a hard time figuring out where to start and how to park. It turns out there are multiple places to start, with hike times varying depending on where you choose.  We chose a spot where the hike was about 20 minutes to the top.

The hill is not built up at all. It’s one of those natural havens to escape to in the middle of a busy city. We found the hike not too strenuous and the views worth it. I would definitely return on a future visit.

Arthur’s Seat definitely would not have been on my radar if not for the book. I’ve since read a few other books set in Edinburgh and would love to visit again and experience the city through the lens of those stories. Until then, I’ll keep reading and keep adding to my wish list!

  2. Books often guide my travels too, I think that’s one of the best introductions – be it fiction or non-fiction – to a city or even a country. I loved hiking up to Arthur’s Seat while living in Edinburgh, the views are incredible and it always allowed me to clear my head

    • So you are much more familiar with it than I am! For some reason nonfiction doesn’t inspire me on travel as much as fiction. I think it’s the imagination element.
